Castel Guelfo
A small town surrounded by mighty fifteenth-century fortifications,
its existence almost entirely within fortified walls is quite remarkable,
in the middle of a wide countryside where everything runs along linear
construction following rivers and roads. The ancient walls, the corner
towers and the Cassero, once the only entrance gate to the castle, are
the dominant characteristics of the town centre.
The ERF concerts will be held in the elegant courtyard with its two-tiered
portico of Palazzo Malvezzi-Hercolani, now municipal offices, and in
the Church of San Giovanni Battista built to the designs of the famous
architect Angelo Venturoli, which now contains a work by Gaetano Gandolfi,
Sacro Cuore Eucaristico.
